Molecular and Circuit Mechanisms for Hippocampal Learning
نویسندگان
چکیده
The hippocampus is crucial for the formation of memories of facts and episodes (Scoville and Milner 1957; Jarrard 1993; Squire et al. 2004; Burgess et al. 2002). In storing the contents of a specific episode, the hippocampus must rapidly form and maintain representations of the temporal and spatial relationship of events and keep these representations distinct, allowing similar episodes to be distinguished, a property termedpattern separation. Furthermore, because specific episodes are rarely replicated in full, the hippocampus must be capable of using partial cues to retrieve previously stored patterns of representations, a phenomenon referred to as pattern completion. Based primarily on the anatomy (Fig. 1) and physiology of the hippocampus and its associated cortical structures, computational neuroscientists have suggested specific hippocampal subregions andcircuits thatmay subserve thesemnemonic requirements. These are the feedforward pathway from the entorhinal cortex (EC) to the dentate gyrus (DG) and on to CA3 for pattern separation, and the recurrent and highly plastic connections in CA3 for pattern completion (Marr 1971;McClelland andGoddard 1996; McNaughton and Nadel 1990; O’Reilly and McClelland 1994).

P3: Mechanisms of TrkB-Mediated Hippocampal Long-Term Potentiation in Learning and Memory
Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a process that certain types of synaptic stimulation lead to a long-lasting enhancement in the strength of synaptic transmission. Studies in recent years indicate the importance of molecular pathways in the development of memory and learning. Tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) is a member of the neurotrophin receptor tyrosine kinase family, that its ligand is b...
متن کاملProteome Analysis of Rat Hippocampus Following Morphine-induced Amnesia and State-dependent Learning
Morphine’s effects on learning and memory processes are well known to depend on synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. Whereas the role of the hippocampus in morphine-induced amnesia and state-dependent learning is established, the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying these processes are poorly understood. The present study intended to investigate whether administration of morphine ...

متن کاملAlterations in adult hippocampal neurogenesis, aberrant protein s-nitrosylation, and associated spatial memory loss in streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus type 2 mice
Objective(s): Epidemiological and biochemical studies conducted over the past two decades have established a strong link between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the exact mechanisms through which aberrations in insulin signaling associated with T2DM contribute to cognitive decline are not yet known. Materials and Methods: In an effort to explore possible m...
متن کاملSimvastatin Attenuates Hippocampal MMP-9 Expression in the Streptozotocin-Induced Cognitive Impairment
Background: Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression has been implicated in molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders, and its abnormal level has been reported in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Some protective mechanisms of statins against neurodegeneration might be mediated by the inhibition of MMP-9 expression. Here, we investigated the effect of simvastatin, on the hippocampal MMP-...
متن کاملEffects of Peripheral and Intra-hippocampal Administration of Sodium Salicylate on Spatial Learning and Memory of Rats
Objective(s) Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are known to play some roles in physiological mechanisms related to learning and memory. Since sodium salicylate is an inhibitor of COX, we have evaluated the effect of peripheral and intra-hippocampal administration of sodium salicylate on spatial learning and memory in male rats. Materials and Methods Male rats were studied in two groups; the first grou...
